Step 1: Pick the Right Carpet

The first step is picking the right kind of carpet for you. This is all about preferences and personal tastes. There are many types of carpets on the market that you can choose, ranging from plush pile carpets to berber cut pile carpets. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and designs.

Visit your local carpet store and the clerk there will help you out!

Step 2: Prep the Floor for the New Carpet

Remove all of the old floorings and all carpetings to make way for the new one. This can be a lot more challenging than it sounded. If your house is old, underneath the floorings or old carpeting will be a lot of old dust, mildew, and detritus of all kinds. So, remember to wear a respirator. You don’t want to breathe all of that in.

Remove any moldings around the floor or doorways, then carefully cut up the old carpets or floorings.

Step 3: Install the Underpad

Vacuum and mop the subfloor carefully. Before you head onto the next step, it should be totally clean and free of dust or debris. The cleaner the subfloor is, the better the carpet will feel underfoot when it’s installed.

At this point, if your floor is new or hasn’t been installed with carpets before, install tackless carpet strips. If you’re replacing an old carpet, leave the old tackless strips in place.

New carpet padding is installed. This is the layer underneath the carpet which will serve as a cushion and insulation layer.

Step 4: Lay the New Carpet

After the padding is installed, it’s time to install the new carpet. The carpet rolls that minimum. The overlay is trimmed up during the installation process. It is a very exacting process and requires a lot of precision. You can’t afford to cut wrongly here, so take careful measurements, then cut with a sharp carpet cutter.

Step 5: Match the Carpet Seams

Unless the room is perfectly square or rectangular, you will need to match up several pieces of carpets. Measurements of the room must be made beforehand so that all of the carpet pieces line up with one another via seams.

The seams are covered and stuck together with seam tapes. To seal the seam tapes, you need to use a steaming iron and a carpet roller.

Step 6: Anchoring the Carpet

This is the last step which will secure the carpet to the walls. The carpet must be stretched with a knee-kicker, then it must be hooked to the tackless strips along the walls with a carpet spreader.

After the carpet is stretched, usually, a final trimming session is done. The carpet is then tucked to the walls, and the molding at the baseboards of the walls are reinstalled.

Conclusion
